Vague Statement

I work for the UPD as a Police Service Assistant and one night we had a call saying someone stole a bicycle off one of the bike racks. I was in the area of the crime and asked dispatch what color the bike was and any description. All i got was "black bike and Hispanic male". Coincidentally, there was a bike party that night and maybe a hundred bicyclist of different ethnicity were riding around campus. So i called dispatch and told him that i wasn't able to find him since there was a bike party going on campus and there was no use stopping each and everyone of them and ask to search their property because it would take all night and it would just be a waste of time. We never caught the guy. All the dispatch said was i got a call from a anonymous person that was 100 meters away. For all we know, the person could have owned that bike.

  1. Hi Layers,
this one is a lot like mine. Btw how did you get that job working for UPD. Im working on becoming a cop and that job interests me. But I know how crazy that can be. Getting a call about a suspect and the only information you receive is extremely vague. Hahah. Its terribly maddening. Next time they got to give you a full description of the suspect so you can do your job correctly!

  3. Before, my friend was having a bike party and was stopped by police officers because a bike party was vaguely described just like yours. Vague statements really don't get you that far to finding anything. Vague statements totally leave people with this general thought and makes it so hard to norrow things down. Like, it made your job so hard because you could not norrow down the person you're looking for. You could've been at least provided with a description of what the person was wearing or any facial or body features so it would make your job at least a little bit easier.

  4. Yea, I agree that this is a good example of a vague description. I think that it is very hard to look in a location and to be sure of who the person is on the bike without even coming off as a little racist as well. It is definetly hard for police officers to make the right pick when there are so many people that can fit that description. I have been in situations similar when people will tell me to look at the girl with long brown hair or something simple like that. ha

  5. That’s cool that you work for UPD on campus. And I can definitely agree with you that the statement that person had been really vague. It’s actually funny, you ask him for descriptions and all they gave you was a five letter sentence that really didn’t get anyone anywhere. What makes it even more hilarious was the fact the was a bike party, so there was definitely no way you would have been able to help this guy out haha. I think that may have been the worst description for Police ever, actually the funniest description, this really had me laughing.
